Cath Short | | Lead Vocal / Backing Vocal
Music has always been a huge part of Cath’s life. Her mother Lynda was in a dance band and continues to play and enjoy her music to this day.
“It never occurred to my sister or me that we couldn’t play the piano or sing” says Cath. “Like learning to read, it was just part of our childhood”.
While attending Otago Girls’ High School in Dunedin, Cath was a member of the Madrigal Choir that travelled to Hawaii winning the Gold Medal at the Pacific Basin Choir Festival.
On leaving school she joined the Dunedin Operatic Society & the Taieri Musical Society for the productions of “Singing’ in the Rain” (96’) “Back 2 Broadway” (97’) the World Premiere of “Rush” (98’) “Annie” (06’) “Jerry’s Girls” (07’) “Grease” (07’) the 08' “Cats” and currently is the assistant producer for the Taieri Musical Society's 08' season of “Honk” .
Despite her long association with Choral and Show Music, Cath’s enthusiasm turned to Rock and Pop.
During the 98’ season of “Rush”, Cath was invited to join Dunedin’s popular “X-Set Cabaret Show” and the “Bill Acklin Duo”.
She spent the next 6˝ years providing entertainment for Weddings, Corporate Events and Conferences and sang backing vocals for numerous performers including Megan Alatini, Sir Howard Morrison and Suzanne Prentice.
She currently performs with well known Dunedin musicians Andy Gilmour & Peter Kesha as the trio “Forbidden Fruit”.
In 2005, Cath was invited to join the Oxo Cubans as the vocal arranger for the bands backing vocal group.
“I find a great deal of satisfaction in providing tight and accurate backing vocals for the Oxo’s”, she says. “I believe there is actually more skill in finding and delivering precise harmonies than in singing the lead vocal.
Singing with the Oxo Cubans is such fun! It’s amazing to be able to make a living from something that I enjoy so much. Music is my passion and my joy”.
Away from the band, Cath teaches contemporary singing, keyboard and music theory at Dunedin’s “Studio A” Music Tuition.
